The small things that matter when you are remote
I have realized that a few small but incredibly important things keep me from feeling terribly isolated as I work remotely.
1. Regular Team Meetings
We have 2 scheduled UX team meetings a week, and just hanging out with the team (even if we are doing something silly like watching Connan o’Brian) keeps me feeling like I am part of the team.
2. Random Emails/ Skype chats
Jenna wrote to me about how she beat a lot of the dudes at ping pong! Linda skypes me once in a while to say hi and tell me about random things like the new coffee machine. Just hearing about the little things that happen everyday, the things that are not part of a meeting agenda - that really helps me feel connected.
3. Asking for Help (and getting it)
If I need something at HQ, I know there are people I can ping to make it happen. I wanted to “be in the office” and I knew I could count on Keith to find a way to put me on google hangouts. I also know most of these people intimately and enjoy a level of comfort in asking for help, an opportunity which a lot of the remote co-workers don’t get.
